Morning: the cave on a timed slot
Book a morning slot (9:15, 9:45, or 10:15 via GetYourGuide, €16) and arrive 10 minutes early. The walk from the car park is 5 minutes uphill. You will finish by 11:00 at the latest. Late morning: Balcón de Europa, Nerja town
From the cave, drive back to Nerja (4 km, 5 min by car). The Balcón de Europa is Nerja’s most famous viewpoint — a rock outcrop with views of the Mediterranean, the beaches and the old town cliffs. Park nearby and walk it in 30 minutes. It is crowded in summer but worth it. The spot is a few hundred metres above the water and gives you the layout of Nerja and the coast.
Midday: Calle Carabeo and lunch
Walk down Calle Hernando de Carabeo (Carabeo street), which is the old town’s prettiest street. It is narrow, white-washed, with potted plants and little bars and shops. Spend 20 minutes wandering, then find a terrace for lunch. If it is a Tuesday, Nerja market (8:00–14:00, about 180 stalls of produce, clothes, household goods) is on the same block as Carabeo. Most of the market closes by 13:00 or 14:00.
Afternoon: Frigiliana (7 km, 20 min by car)
After lunch, drive inland 7 km (20 minutes) to Frigiliana, the white hill village that is on every Nerja day trip. The whole village is built on a steep slope; the streets are narrow white steps. Spend 2–3 hours walking, sitting in squares, having a coffee, reading the painted tiles that tell the story of a Muslim-Christian war fought here in the 1500s. Many bars have terraces with views. Frigiliana is authentic — far less touristy than Nerja town, even though tour groups flood it daily.
